POSTDOCTORAL POSITION AVAILABLE: Biochemistry/Cell Biology/Genetics of Phytophthora infestans (Southern California, USA)

1-2 Postdoctoral associates are sought to study Phytophthora infestans, the oomycete (a fungus-like organism) that causes the late blight diseases of potato and tomato. This is the same species that caused the Irish potato famine in the mid-1800's, and is arguably the most important pathogen of potato today.

The successful applicant(s) will join projects aimed at characterizing genes and their corresponding proteins that are involved in sexual and asexual sporulation. These genes have, in general, already been identified using subtractive cloning methods and various genomics approaches. The integration of sexual and asexual sporulation with signal transduction pathways will also be addressed. The research plan involves a combination of functional genomics (gene silencing and overexpression in P. infestans transformants); biochemistry (expression of recombinant proteins, identification of kinase/phosphatase substrates, characterization of interacting proteins/subunits); and cell biology (subcellular localization).

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline and skill in biochemistry, cell biology, or molecular biology. A command of written and spoken English is required. Experience with filamentous fungi is not required, and scientists with training in other systems (plants, etc.) are welcome to apply.

The laboratory is based in Southern California, USA, about one hour away from Los Angeles.

Postdoctoral Position on Fungal Signal Transduction and Pathogenesis

A postdoctoral position is available at the Department of Genetics, University of Cordoba, Spain to study signal transduction in the pathogenic fungus Fusarium oxysporum (see Mol Microbiol 39:1140). The successful candidate will participate in an effort to identify key signalling components required for fungal pathogenesis. We are looking for a highly motivated PhD scientist with a strong background in molecular and cell biology. Experience with fungal or yeast systems will be an asset. The position is available immediately or as agreed. Appointment duration is up to three years, renewed on a yearly basis.

A Postdoc position will be available from January 2002 (later dates possible) for three years to carry out theoretical work within the EU funded Project "European marine genetic biodiversity" at the University of Vigo (Spain).

The overall aim of the project is to develop guidelines for management of coastal zone genetic biodiversity and appraise the importance of marine biodiversity at the genetic level. The specific work will focus on developing computer modelling to combine genetic and demographic data from species with varying life-history characteristics. Short- and long-term effects of different threats to genetic biodiversity will be addressed: (i) fragmentation of habitats; (ii) introduction of artificial habitats; (iii) artificial selection; (iv) population fluctuations and bottlenecks. The results are aimed at (i) evaluating short- and long-term impacts of human activities on marine biodiversity; (ii) producing recommendations about which species, and which demographic, life history and metapopulation characters, should be monitored in management of coastal zone invertebrates; and (iii) suggesting strategies for limiting negative effects of human perturbations.

The successful candidate will have to possess a PhD training in population genetics, quantitative genetics, or conservation, as well as in computer modelling. Salary will be approximately 28.000 EURO per year. Candidates should contact:

Se buscan candidatos/as para una beca, de tres años de duración para realizar una tesis doctoral en el Departamento de Genética Molecular de Plantas en el Centro Nacional de Biotecnología-CSIC.

Mi laboratorio dispone de un contrato de Titulado Superior CSIC vinculado a un convenio con una empresa farmaceutica española, con el objeto de analizar un raton knockout especifico, generado en nuestro laboratorio.

El contrato laboral (Grupo 1, Titulado Superior, Doctor o Licenciado, aunque preferentemente se valoraran candidatos/as postdoctorales) es de incorporacion inmediata y tiene una duracion prevista hasta Agosto de 2004. La retribucion economica y condiciones salariales del contrato laboral vienen especificadas en el convenio laboral unico de la Administracion del Estado para titulados superiores del Grupo 1 (14 pagas, 1462,91 ¤ brutos mensuales).

El candidato/a deberia tener experiencia en biologia molecular (tecnicas de clonaje y analisis basico de la expresion genica) y biologia celular, en particular en cultivo y transfeccion de celulas animales y especificamente se valorara (aunque no es absolutamente necesario) experiencia en el manejo de celulas embrionales de raton (celulas ES) con objeto de abordar proximas inactivaciones de genes mediante recombinacion homologa, previstas en el laboratorio.

In the Fungal Genomics section of the laboratory of Microbiology of Wageningen University there is a Fellowship for a maximum of 12 months available in the field of functional genomics in Aspergillus niger.

The fellowship is part of a programme in which genes encoding proteins involved in the regulation of metabolic pathways are investigated. The candidate should have a PhD in molecular genetics. Although no specific experience with the molecular genetics of fungi is requested, the candidate should have excellent technical skills, previous experience in Bio-informatics is considered positively. A thorough command of the English language is essential.

"DETERMINANTES DE ESPECTRO DE HUESPED EN BACTERIAS PATOGENAS DE PLANTAS"

Se ofrece contrato postdoctoral en el marco de un proyecto CICYT, con duración de hasta 2 años y retribución negociable (alrededor de ¤1600 brutos/mes).

Proyecto: Se persigue el análisis y caracterización de una región génica de Pseudomonas syringae que es esencial para la producción de enfermedad en judía.

Perfil: Se valorará experiencia en biología molecular de microorganismos, conocimientos de bacteriología, experiencia con manejo de fitopatógenos y plantas, productividad, dedicación e iniciativa en la investigación. El nivel de inglés debe ser suficiente a nivel oral y escrito para transmitir los resultados de investigación.
